Cores

Cores are the dark areas that occur where the light side meets the dark side on rounded surfaces. These areas get the least reflected light. They’re a great way to give your surfaces added definition. For that reason, cores are often exaggerated in life drawings. The example in Figure 6-33, by Michelangelo (no slouch in the life drawing department), shows an exquisite use of cores. Done as a study for the Libyan Sybil in the Sistine Chapel, it has a clear core running all the way down the figure’s back and another on the left forearm.
