The tech industry is known for high pressure, a rapid pace, and sometimes demanding workloads, with surveys finding that 73% of developers have felt burned out in their career and 83% have suffered work-related burnout.

Truly effective engineers sustain high performance over years while maintaining a healthy relationship with work. This chapter covers strategies to avoid burnout and keep yourself productive and fulfilled in the long run.

Recognizing Burnout and Stress

Before diving into prevention strategies, it’s crucial to recognize the warning signs. Burnout is more than just a tough day; it’s a state of chronic exhaustion (emotional, mental, physical), cynicism or detachment from work, and reduced effectiveness. Some warning signs are physical and emotional, and others show up in the work environment.

Physical and emotional warning signs include the following:

Exhaustion

Feeling tired and drained most of the time, even after rest. You dread starting work in the morning.
