Chapter 10. Industry-Specific Perspectives

This chapter contains a collection of essays about the implementation of data lakes by data experts from various industries. One essay had to be published anonymously because the writer could not get permission to reveal their affiliation, while the others are fully attributed. While the rest of the book is focused on best practices and characteristics of successful data lakes gleaned through numerous discussions with practitioners, this chapter is focused on industry specifics. Each essay is by a different industry expert and addresses some or all of the following questions:

The essays provide an overview of some of the main initiatives driving big data lake adoption for different industries.

Why now?

What has changed to enable these solutions? How have Hadoop, big data, data science, or data lakes changed the equation?

What’s next?

Where does the author see the industry going in adopting big data and analytics? How is data going to change their industry?
