Iodine deficiency disorder (IDD) is the world’s leading cause of mental disorders, including retardation and lowered IQ. Research indicates that 30 percent of the world’s population is at risk of IDD. Well-balanced diets provide the required amount of iodine, making the poor particularly susceptible to this condition. A beggar on the street with a prominent goiter on his neck is one visible sign of IDD. Children living in iodine-deficient areas have an average IQ 13 points less than that of children in iodine-sufficient areas.
