Preface
The purpose of The Handbook of Corporate Governance (Handbook) is to ensure coverage of corporate governance holistically, but also with the depth and criticism that is only made possible with subject matter experts. No other similar Handbook exists, to the editor's knowledge. The Handbook is therefore unique not only because of the depth of analysis, but also because of the authors. Subject matter experts write on critical topics, such as strategy, risk, auditing, executive compensation, board and executive succession planning, information technology, shareholder and other stakeholder relations, and climate change and sustainability, all from the perspective of the board of directors and its committees.
There is a mix of both academic and practitioner authors in this Handbook, drawn from leaders all over the world. Academics bring proximity to the empirical research and literature, rigor, and structure. Practitioners, including board chairs, CEOs, directors, and professional advisors to boards, bring a depth of practical experience and relevance. As close as possible, academic authors with practical experience, and practitioners with an aptitude for critical writing, have been chosen to contribute. I believe that I have succeeded.
