1.1 A New Design Paradigm: The Internet of Things
In 2016, there were 6.4 million Internet of Things (IoT) devices globally; this number is expected to become 20–50 billion by 2030. With the human population projected to be about 8–9 billion by then, which means in few years, there will be 5–6 IoT devices for each one of us (Jovanovi´c, 2021; Kraijak & Tuwanut, 2015; Worldometer, 2021).
With technological breakthroughs such as 5G fuelling this growth, the real driving force behind this growth is integration; IoT is being integrated into all modern and emerging fields of technology, development, engineering, and manufacturing (Wang et al., 2021).
