Three ideas, taken from three books, have shaped my thinking over the past few years and led me to the view that universities need to change rapidly and radically if they are to survive the 21st century. These books, very different in context and style, share a common thread that links the past to today and provides an optimistic outlook for tomorrow. It is that thread that I try to apply to universities, in the UK and around the world.
