Introduction
My parents and grandparents lived through the twentieth century and there was absolutely no way someone born in the early 1900s could have predicted either the wonders of the world in the year 2000 or the amazing increase in the standards of living of the people in the Western world. However, we have a big advantage over the citizens of 1910: our knowledge base is almost infinitely larger and so some predictions can be made with a fair amount of certainty—at least to mid-century.
