In the Age of Exploration, a navigator was only as effective as his ability to sustain his boat with timber, tar, and sailcloth, and his voyage with financing and political stability. In the Industrial Revolutions, ingenuity thrived on coal and iron, electricity and steel, as much as it did labor laws, trade routes, and organized production. Breakthroughs have always rested on both material resources and the social infrastructure to support them.
AI is no different. Progress depends as much on access to chips, fabs (chip fabrication facilities), high‐quality data, and energy abundance, as it does on guardrails, governance, and trust. Beneath the technical advances of each AI breakthrough, there is a hidden scaffolding of societal thresholds that determine adoption. Explainability ensures we know how systems work. Alignment and safety ensure they pursue the right goals without harm. Governance provides rules that steer development. Coordination ensures those rules work across borders
None of these conditions can be taken for granted; we need to achieve every one of them. Only when these pillars align can the potential of the RenAIssance move from possibility to reality.
