Lighting a Dark Room

Dynamic lighting for weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, and corporate events.

GEAR NEEDED:

  • Camera + Trigger
  • Fast-focusing lens of any focal length
  • 2 Off-camera flashes
  • 2 9-12' Light stands
  • 2 Grids
  • Gel set (optional)

If you’ve already read Scenario 23, “Event Bounce Flash,” then you know this is not my go-to lighting for wedding receptions. However, this kind of lighting is 100% more dynamic than what I typically do. Even though, for reasons I mentioned in that scenario, I prefer to bounce flash throughout the night, I do often set up a few shots using the following technique. It adds a lot of dimension to the images and definitely a level of quality.
