WESTINGHOUSE and General Electric were the twin titans of early twentieth-century American industry.1 Both were founded by charismatic inventors, Westinghouse by George Westinghouse Jr., and GE by Thomas Edison. Both GE and Westinghouse were early pioneers in the technologies of railroads and electricity generation. Both companies suffered during the Great Depression, served at the heart of the American war effort during the 1940s, and rode the postwar boom in products ranging from refrigerators to radios. In the 1950s and 1960s, the two great rivals were both household names.
