5Building a Pentesting Lab

Having a lab is a good way for pentesters to test exploit code and other types of simulated cyberattacks. Testing a proof of concept (PoC) prior to using an exploit during a pentest can enable a pentester to ensure that the exploit will work in production. Some exploits can make systems unstable, and testing it in a lab is a good way to verify the safety of the exploit.

Whether you're learning the craft of ethical hacking or doing work as a paid professional, having your own pentesting lab is a must.

Graphic depiction that Chapter 5 focuses on building a pentesting lab for pentesters to test exploit code and other types of simulated cyberattacks and learning the craft of ethical hacking.

Pentesting Lab Options

You have options when it comes to building your lab. You can take a minimalist approach, or you can build very complex labs. The more complex you get with your lab, the longer it takes to set up.

The choice you make may depend on the amount of time and money you want to invest. You can build your lab using routers, switches, personal computers (PCs), and servers. Something to consider with complex labs is that the more complex the lab, the more electricity it will consume as well as the more heat it will output, which may also result in using more electricity in order to cool the area where your lab is located. Complex labs can also be noisy due to the system components, such as the internal fans used to cool the computers.

Minimalist Lab

This option is less costly and requires less electricity to operate. It can be a single ...
