Spheres of Advocacy

Per Merriam-Webster, advocacy is the ‘act or process of supporting a cause or proposal’ (1). Often, leaders are involved in the advocacy process for themselves and others. Typically, these leaders are often tagged with the term ‘sponsor.’ A sponsor is ‘a person who takes the responsibility for some other person or thing’ (1). In layman’s terms, a leadership sponsor is one who uses their experience, influence and skillset to leverage situations for the benefit of others.

Sponsors typically operate in two spheres. (See Figure 2.1 for details.)

A matrix shows the outcome based on two factors: Advocates for others and Influence. Data in the format, Advocates for others, Influence: Outcome, are as follows. Yes, No: Marginal sponsor. Yes, Yes: Ideal sponsor. No, No: Waste of time. No, Yes: Poor fit.
