This book is the product of twenty years of fieldwork, consulting, and teaching. It draws inspiration and insight from colleagues and clients, leaders of public and private organizations, community sponsors, and above all from those at the bottom of the pyramid. We have repeatedly witnessed how villagers and the uncelebrated members of governments, NGOs, and companies successfully tackle intractable problems when given an authentic opportunity to do so. We particularly acknowledge the many positive deviants (PDs) we have encountered on this journey—unknown and seemingly ordinary people whose innovative gifts, once discovered, have enabled entire communities to transform themselves.
