Project initiation

Chapter 6 contains checklists to start projects. Project initiation requires putting the resources in place, developing a project plan, and getting the project team started on delivering the project.

6.1 THE PROJECT SPONSOR

The project sponsor is a key role in every project. The sponsor represents the interests of the project investors and supports the project manager to fulfil his or her day-to-day role. The project manager manages the day-to-day work on the project.

The project sponsor’s role is to:

  • Identify the business need for a project, and act as an evangelist for the project.
  • Provide senior support to a project during execution:
    • accessing resources
    • overcoming problems
    • decision making – e.g. approving baseline ...
