CHAPTER 15 Time Design: When All Else Fails
In Chapter 13 I mentioned that there are times when “conventional” timestretching simply doesn’t get us close enough to a good sounding vocal. Even though everything is in time and at the correct tempo and even though, with the latest and best time-stretching algorithms, there are few enough actual audio artifacts, there are still issues with the vocal because of two main factors: the vibrato is way too fast (or slow) and there are too many (or too few) notes over a given period of time for it to sound natural. One of these we can do something about and one we can do very little about. We’ll start by taking a look at the one we can’t really improve upon.
