Inertia is a powerful force. Newton’s first law of physics tells us that an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion. As psychologists we know that Newton’s Laws don’t just apply to objects in outer space, but also to people and their inner space. Although making changes may never be easy, we may also have a tendency to make them harder on ourselves than is necessary. In this section, we’ll examine strategies for change and identify the kinds of small but significant steps each of us can take to begin to turn the tables on stress.
