To be productive as a developer, you need a good understanding and control of the tools you use.
In some professions, formal training is given in the “tools of the trade.” My father works in chemistry and he shared that, for a job in a chemistry laboratory, the first step is learning what the instruments are and what they do. Early days are spent as an assistant using simple instruments, under supervision. Once proficiency is demonstrated, there’s access to more complicated tools and tasks. After a few years, it’s possible for lab workers to operate complex instruments entirely by themselves and to train new assistants.
