abstraction Starting from a computer program’s source code and creating a representation of a high level of functionality.

abstraction-filtration-comparison test The test to find nonliteral copyright infringement of a computer program’s source code by abstracting the code to a high level of functionality, filtering out those source code elements that are not protectable, and then comparing two computer programs to find copying. Put forth by Judge John Walker in his opinion for the case of Computer Associates International Inc. v. Altai Inc.
