Indigenous Knowledge and itsProtection in India

Indigenous knowledge (IK)1 has been used for centuries by Indian indigenous and local communities, and has been the mainstay of their existence, especially in the key sectors of food and health. In addition, IK plays a vital role in the conservation of biodiversity.

The Indian Systems of Medicine (ISM) have a central place in the official Indian healthcare system. Doctors trained in Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani are part of the formal system. The government of India has recently created a Department of Indian Systems of Medicine in the Ministry of Health to oversee policy and research in this area.
