The Integration of Measurement
In Chapter 6, I emphasized the importance of measuring what is most important. Yet this is only a piece of the “big picture.” The key message of this chapter is that an organization cannot just focus on isolated measures—at least not for long. Here the emphasis shifts from focus to integration—the relationships among measures. Depending on one or two measures to drive organizational success is rather like “calling the play” in a football game versus having an overall strategy for winning the game, or depending on one investment to achieve wealth instead of managing the full portfolio. Both focus and integration are essential to organizational performance measurement success.
