Strategic Enterprise IT Capabilities and Competencies

Until this point we have been focusing on the broad requirements for Strategic IT Management in general, and for the enterprise IT capabilities in particular. In Part I, this meant turbulence, uncertainty, trust, and demonstrated performance, summarized into requirements for Strategic IT Management in Chapter 7. In Part II, this meant the general enterprise IT capabilities required for effective IT services, partnership, and leadership. In addition, specific requirements of holistic perspective, business focused, and commonality of core concepts and information about the enterprise and its IT activities were presented.

The enterprise IT capabilities match up with the Anthony Triangle1 classification of management activities as strategic, tactical, and operational, as shown in Exhibit 12.1. This overview description shows the objective, general outcomes, the specific outcomes needed to deal with turbulent times, and example methods. For the guidance of enterprise managers, a self-test for current enterprise IT capabilities is shown here in summary, and later on, in detail. The overall idea is that by assessing where the enterprise is today, a sense of gap and potential improvements can be developed.
