It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

DNSサーバーと通信する
5-5でDNSサーバーについて解説しました。
ドメイン名とIPアドレスを紐づけ、ドメイン名からIPアドレスに変換
してくれています。
実際にWindowsのPC からDNSサーバーと通信してみましょう。
コマンドプロンプトから「nslookup」と入力します。このコマンドは
DNSサーバーに直接リクエストを上げます。正しく通信ができていれば
結果が表示されます。
nslookupコマンドの表示例
>nslookup問い合わせしたいホスト名
サーバー：DNSサーバーの名前
Address：DNSサーバーの IPアドレス
名前：問い合わせしたいホスト名
Address：IPアドレスの結果
問い合わせしたいホスト名には、例えばyahoo.co.jpなどと入力してみ
ましょう。プロバイダのWebサービスを活用している企業や団体ではIP
アドレスが表示されないこともあります。
接続テストなので、Webサーバーを自ら設置していそうな有名なサイト
や企業がよいと思います。
DNSサーバーの名前には家庭からと企業や団体のネットワークから接
続する場合では異なります。
