Chapter 7
Space–time Trellis Codes1
7.1 Introduction
In the previous chapter, we have detailed the encoding and decoding processes of space–time block codes [71–73]. Various proposed space–time block codes [72,73] were discussed and their performance investigated when communicating over perfectly interleaved, non-dispersive Rayleigh fading channels. A range of systems consisting of space–time block codes and different channel codecs were proposed. The performance versus estimated complexity trade-off of the different systems was investigated and compared.
While understanding the basic space–time trellis coding principles does not require deep prior knowledge in the field of channel coding, an appreciation of the concepts of trellis-based decoding techniques, which have been extensively discussed in Chapters 1, 2 and 14, is necessary. Furthermore, as in the previous chapter, we will combine space–time trellis coding with the various channel codecs previously highlighted in the book.
In an effort to provide as comprehensive a technology road-map as possible and to identify the most promising schemes in light of their performance versus estimated complexity, in this chapter we shall explore the family of space–time trellis codes [70, 80, 191-194] which were proposed by Tarokh et al. Space–time trellis codes incorporate jointly designed channel coding, modulation, transmit diversity and optional receiver diversity. The performance criteria for designing space–time trellis codes were ...
