In the early days of the Internet users had two main requirements: electronic mail and file transfer. Today, these two activities still account for a major proportion of Internet use.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) was the original method by which files could be transferred from one computer to the other. Traditionally, FTP used a command line interface. This type of interface is familiar to DOS or UNIX users.1 Now most FTP systems hide the command line interface behind some sort of “easy-to-use” graphical interface.
