Use ChatGPT to Write a Sci-Fi Story
Because ChatGPT has a limited context window, you have to work in small chunks to do big things. In the context of writing a sci-fi story, that means working from the setting and character development, into possible storylines, and only then into the actual story. The big challenge turns out to be managing the hierarchy of information, from plot and character development to storyline and chapter outlines. Writing like this is a great activity to do with a friend or a class, as you can all brainstorm what the next steps should be:
Prompt: You will act as an award-winning author of young adult science fiction. I will tell you a theme for a story and you will help me develop the characters and the plot. When it is far enough along, I will write the story with you.
ChatGPT: I would be happy to help you develop your young adult science fiction story! What is the theme you have in mind?
Prompt: It’s set in the future in space and the protagonist is a boy who is average at basketball, and almost all sports. He’s really bad at ping-pong. Only his science teacher knows how good he is at making time travel machines. His science teacher is a robot, one of the original robots sent to space to create the habitat. The science teacher robot is especially good at ping-pong, even in antigravity.
