I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Use Tableau Desktop for Instant Level of Detail Calculations
When Tableau Desktop introduced Level of Detail calculations in 2015, the functionality helped users answer their questions using data at multiple levels of detail without having to use blending or multiple data sources. While useful, Level of Detail calculations have created a new calculation syntax that takes many people a lot of getting used to. However, there is now a way to form simple Level of Detail calculations by just dragging one field to another and holding down a keyboard key.
Level of Detail calculations allow you to form calculations that are not based on what else you have in your view, or include/exclude extra levels of granularity. Tableau Desktop normally aggregates your measures to the level of detail set by the dimensions you are using in your view.
To generate a Level of Detail calculation without typing any functions or formulas, you need to drag your measure on top of the dimension in the Data pane on the right hand side of the screen while holding down the Control or Command key on your keyboard.
Consider the Superstore dataset, which is shipped with each copy of Tableau Desktop. The data records product sales in orders for a fictitious store. Without Level of Detail calculations it is difficult to work out anything at the customer level of detail without including that within the view you create. If you did want to include all 800 ...
