A survey of gender budgeting efforts 1

I. Introduction

This chapter examines the experience of a variety of gender budgeting initiatives in several sub-Saharan African countries. We focus on Rwanda and Uganda because of the sustained and to some degree, successful executions of their initiatives. We also look at salient aspects of the initiatives in South Africa and Tanzania, which were the original efforts in the region, and Ethiopia, which had an interesting subnational focus, and Nigeria, which had a focus on a critical healthcare need for women.
