A survey of gender budgeting efforts1

I. Introduction

Gender budgeting originated in Australia, before spreading to the rest of the world (Sharp and Broomhill, 2002). But it has most readily been adopted in Europe. Some countries, such as Austria, have incorporated gender budgeting into the constitution. This chapter summarizes a few examples of the development of gender budgeting in developed countries, in order to provide a range of experiences that demonstrate useful role models for other countries.
