At the end of our lives, it is likely that we still have significant assets in our possession (i.e., the estate), and most of us have a goal or intention for how those assets are to be distributed. For example, we might wish to donate significant assets to charities or pass the assets to family members. Estate planning, as illustrated in Figure 10.1, helps us achieve that in a timely, cost-efficient, and conflict-free manner.
The main objective for this chapter is to learn how the estate can be transferred with minimum conflict, court involvement and legal fees, and taxes.
