2.1 Introduction

And the winner is... Heartland Payment Systems for the single largest data breach in US history as of 2009. Since then, there have been many more data breaches. A few are shown in Table 2.1. Honestly it is debatable which breach gets the W for the most information leaks. Yahoo in December 2016 announced the incident that occurred in 2013 and leaked 3 billion accounts, and Alibaba leaked 1.1 billion pieces of user data in November 2019.
