MISSION STATEMENT

Before you tackle any business analytics initiative or project, it is imperative to understand your organization’s top priorities, as well as the company’s mission. A mission statement is a statement of the value proposition of a company or an organization. The mission statement guides the actions of the organization by laying out the company’s goals, and it aids in decision making. It also provides the framework under which the company’s strategies are formulated and is the foundation of the company’s “raison d’être,” or reason for existence. Peter Senge, the director of the Center for Organizational Learning at the MIT Sloan School of Management, said it best: “Mission instills the passion and patience for the long journey.”1 Your organization’s mission statement is the core from which business challenges will be derived for your business analytics efforts.
