Our hard disks store our programs and, most important, our precious data, so they have a special place in the computing firmament. The new solid-state drives have no moving parts, so they’re extremely reliable, but that doesn’t mean you’ll never have problems. Defective drives are rare, but not unicorn-rare, and there’s always the chance that Windows—through a programming error, an app or system crash, or a sudden shutdown (such as a power outage)—could mess up your hard disk.
