Synopsis

Perform a backup or restore, and rebuild a server.

Windows 2000 Backup and Recovery Tools (also called Windows Backup) is opened by:

Windows Backup is assumed to be open for the following procedures. Backup and recovery can be performed and configured either using a wizard or the Explorer-like interface. (The following procedures use the wizards on the General tab.)

What to back up

System-state data includes the registry and other critical files, including Active Directory, on domain controllers. See System-State Data in the article disaster recovery for more information.

Where to store the backup

You can only select Tape Drive when a tape drive is actually attached. If you have a tape drive attached, enter the tape name in the second box.

Select File if you want to back up to a hard disk, removable disk, or network share. In this case you specify the absolute or UNC path to the backup file (.bkf file) you want to create.

Advanced (optional)

Click Finish instead to select the default settings here (shown in parentheses). Click Advanced to choose the backup method (normal), whether to verify data (no), use hardware compression (varies with device), append or replace the backup to the media (append), restrict access to the backup set to the owner and Administrator (recommended when backing up Active Directory, but only available when you replace, not append), specify ...
