Synopsis
Configure WINS clients, configure a WINS proxy, configure WINS replication, create a static mapping, and install WINS.
Procedures
The following procedures use the WINS console in Administrative tools (available when WINS is installed) unless otherwise specified.
Configure WINS Clients
You can configure WINS clients either manually or automatically using DHCP. For Windows 2000 clients, do the following:
- Manual
Start → Settings → Network and Dial-up Connections → right-click on Local-Area Connection → Properties → Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) → Properties → Advanced → WINS → select Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP → Add → specify IP address of primary WINS server → Add → OK
Specify a secondary WINS server if there is one.
- Automatic
Configure DHCP scope options 044 and 046 on the DHCP server (see DHCP in this chapter).
Configure a WINS Proxy
To
configure a Windows 2000 server to act as a WINS proxy, use
regedt32.exe
to change EnableProxy from
to 1 in the following registry key:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters |
You should have no more than two WINS proxies per subnet. Make sure you also configure the WINS proxy computer as a WINS client.
Configure WINS Replication
Select a WINS server → right-click on Replication Partners → New → Replication Partner → specify the IP address of the replication partner → OK
