Throughout this book, various add-on software is mentioned in the solutions to various problems. Now, wherever possible, I try not to make a particular solution absolutely dependent on add-on software—after all, I’d rather you carry around this book than a CD packed with useless shareware.

In some cases, of course, a software solution is either the preferable or the only recourse. Fortunately, nearly all the software necessary to fill the holes in Windows as discussed in this book is freely available on the Internet.
