Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) enables computers to register and resolve NetBIOS names on IPv4 networks. WINS is not used with IPv6 networks. WINS is maintained primarily for backward support and compatibility with legacy applications and early versions of Microsoft Windows, including Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT, that used WINS for computer name resolution; or for networks running Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 that don’t have Active Directory deployed and thus don’t require DNS.
