Chapter 3. Hyper-V Architecture
Microsoft delivers Hyper-V in two forms: as a role in Windows Server 2008 or as a stand-alone product called Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008. Windows Server 2008 can be installed with or without the Hyper-V role. Without Hyper-V, the operating system components and applications run directly on the underlying hardware. When Hyper-V is introduced, this behavior changes dramatically.
