Planning and Design Considerations

Most large organizations require multiple WINS servers for redundancy, or they need WINS servers in each regional office. To keep these WINS servers synchronized and ensure that all clients can resolve any NetBIOS name, you will need to create replication partnerships between the WINS servers. Properly planned, a distributed WINS infrastructure can operate almost maintenance-free. Without proper planning, a WINS infrastructure can be unreliable, consume excess bandwidth, and be difficult to troubleshoot.
