Simple 8-bits per pixel raster image format used on UNIX systems (and X-Windows icons) and used by the Web. Pixels are set to one of 256 colours. Actually C language source code (an array) to be read by a compiler rather than a graphic viewer. Less memory efficient than GIF. Typical file extent is '.xpm'.
