ディープラーニングが世に出てから、いくらかの時間が過ぎました。今となってはディープラーニングは様々な場所で使われており、大きな成果をあげています。これまでの成功事例は枚挙にいとまがありません。中でも深層強化学習と呼ばれる分野では、驚くような成果がいくつも達成されてきました。例を挙げると次のとおりです。
- テレビゲームを人より上手くプレイする
- 囲碁の世界チャンピオンを破る
- eスポーツで世界チャンピオンを破る
このような成功事例は、強化学習とディープラーニングが組み合わさったことにより初めてもたらされました。さらに最近では、実世界でも（ゲームのようなバーチャルな世界以外でも）成功事例が見られます。たとえば、ロボットの操作や半導体チップの設計など、産業界でも大きな成果が報告されています。
また多くの研究者は、強化学習が「汎用人工知能」を実現するための鍵となる技術（少なくとも、それに近づくための技術）であると見ています。汎用人工知能は、私たち人間のように様々な問題を柔軟にこなせる知能であり、1つのシステムで多様な問題を解くことを目標とします。強化学習とディープラーニングは、汎用人工知能を実現するにあたって重要な技術となるでしょう。
このように、強化学習とディープラーニングには大きな可能性があります。本書は「ゼロから作るDeep Learning」のシリーズ4作目です。テーマは強化学習。強化学習について基礎からスタートし、ディープラーニングが使われる最先端の技術までを一気通貫で学びます。なお本書を読むにあたって、Pythonと数学についての基礎的な知識があれば、前作までの知識は必要とせず本書から始めることができます。
