Chapter 4

Wider-Band “Single-Carrier” Transmission

Abstract

This chapter discusses the basic principles of a single-carrier transmission scheme, with special focus on so-called DFT-precoded OFDM, the OFDM-based transmission scheme on which the LTE uplink is designed. By reducing the relatively large variations in the instantaneous transmission power of conventional OFDM, DFT-precoded OFDM improves the terminal power-amplifier efficiency, thus reducing the cost and power consumption of the mobile terminal.
