Chapter 45. Low-Cost Sensors and the Quality of Data

In 2016, I was working on a project witht the aim of developing inexpensive air quality monitoring products using low-cost sensors and low-power devices such as Raspberry Pis and Arduinos. So, to begin the project, we ordered sensors and boards to do a proof of concept.
Our first issue was with the low-cost sensors. We ordered only the required number of sensors: one particulate matter sensor, one nitrogen oxide sensor, and one ozone sensor for one board. The plan was to set up a couple of monitoring sensors around a site and monitor the air quality for one year. We set up redundancies to protect the data in case the internet was not working, by storing the data on an SD card. After the first couple of weeks of testing, we had a power surge and lost all the data on the SD card. The Raspberry Pi was damaged, but the sensors were reused, as they seemed to be working.
The second issue was with the internet. As I said, when it stopped working at the site, all the data was being stored on the SD card. This happened multiple times during our data-capture phase. We reordered the sensors and boards that were damaged, but they took a long time to be delivered, which in turn affected the amount of data we were able to capture.
