DSP System Design Flow

This book is aimed at engineers with little or no previous experience of digital signal processing. Therefore, in this chapter we hope to explain the DSP design process and answer some important questions about method, tools and technique. Figure 8.1 shows a generalized and abstracted DSP system design flow that everyone inevitably goes through. We will look at the components of this flow and the tools available to assist in each of the stages.

DEFINE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

This chapter is concerned with the practical aspects of undertaking a design project using a single-chip digital signal processor. We do not cover in detail the more theoretical aspects of DSP system specification such as system requirements definition, signal analysis, resource analysis and configuration analysis. These are important considerations in any design, but the detail required to introduce these topics is beyond the scope of our book. There is an excellent discussion of the subject, with a full worked example, in DeFatta et al. [1988], This is thoroughly recommended for anyone embarking upon a major DSP system design. Our analysis of the design process begins after the basic requirements of the system are determined.
