8.2. Surface upwelling longwave radiation

Surface upwelling longwave radiation, which is dominated by the surface temperature (see Chapter 7), is an indicator of how warm the Earth's surface is. This section focuses on methods used to estimate the surface upwelling longwave radiation. Three methods will be presented. Section 8.2.1 describes the widely used temperature-emissivity method, and Section 8.2.2 presents the linear and ANN model methods developed using the general framework of hybrid methods (see Section 8.1.3).

8.2.1. Temperature-emissivity method

Theoretically, the surface upwelling longwave radiation consists of two components: the surface longwave emission and the reflected surface downward longwave radiation (Liang, 2004):
