The first stage of the Design Double Diamond approach, Discover, is all about exploring problems and gathering evidence. The Double Diamond itself is a simple but powerful framework that breaks design into four phases—Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver—moving from broad exploration to focused decisions, twice: once for the problem, and once for the solution. Research is at the very heart of this stage—and at the very heart of everything we do in UX design. Without it, we’re just guessing and relying on our personal experiences rather than the experience of our users. And yet, research has a reputation problem: it’s seen as slow, messy, and often too expensive to keep pace with the realities of product development.
