Chapter 2 When AI Powers Digital Twins
Multiple types of twins are those of:
- Objects and systems—infrastructure, vehicles, buildings, cities, pipelines, IT systems, supply chains, and natural environments
- Processes and workflows—organizational logic, management, decision paths, and policies
- Humans—behavior, thought patterns, and interactions
When AI powers these twins, they become living systems informed by their entire industry, offering continuous situational awareness and real-time interaction. We get adaptive engines that streamline operations, ensure compliance, reduce human error, and map work directly to outcomes.
We have weekly breakthroughs in model performance, industrial-scale compute, autonomous machines. Retrieval-based computing has been replaced by real-time generation, requiring dense industrial compute. New data centers function as AI factories—massive power-hungry clusters running autonomy, simulation, logistics, and decision workflows. Robotics and autonomous vehicles depend on these environments, training and optimizing inside high-fidelity digital twins. As our resources approach power and cooling limits, compute expands into orbit, where abundant solar energy and the potential for highly efficient radiative cooling—if engineering challenges around heat dissipation in a vacuum can be resolved—may make space-based clusters economically viable.
Operating in this landscape demands a mindset shift. Hype cycles are noise; utility defines value. The differentiator ...
