Chapter 3 AI Agents Within Digital Twins
AI transforms raw ideas to deployable systems at unprecedented speed and scale. Edge AI improves retail maintenance and inventory; agents assist financial services with research and compliance; agentic workflows optimize manufacturing lifecycles and detect anomalies; conversational AI accelerates healthcare diagnosis and triage. This chapter explores how next-generation platforms and agent ecosystems enhance the digital twin space through scalable compute, multimodal reasoning, and interoperable protocols. These advancements often bypass traditional engineering cycles, rethinking operations from the ground up, driven by individuals who experience the value firsthand. AI elevates data engineers from plumbers to architects. Agents navigate complex pipelines and fragmented infrastructure, and data professionals design the tools that orchestrate them. Moreover, AI embraces decentralization: instead of forcing scattered data into centralized warehouses that lose context, agents interface directly with diverse sources, generate insights, and take autonomous action.
Despite its promise, adoption faces barriers: technical integration complexity, organizational inertia, ethical concerns around autonomy and accountability, security risks, and regulatory constraints. Addressing these is essential for agentic AI and digital twins to reach their transformative potential.
This chapter progresses from fundamentals of AI agents through design, implementation, ...
