Chapter 17Smart Transportation
Smart transportation systems (STS) are revolutionizing the way people and goods move, leveraging advanced technologies to enhance the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of transportation networks. As urbanization increases and the demand for more efficient transportation solutions grows, traditional systems are being complemented and, in some cases, replaced by intelligent, data-driven solutions. STS encompass a wide range of applications, including intelligent traffic management, autonomous vehicles, electric and connected vehicles, infrastructure monitoring, and emergency response systems. These systems integrate technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and big data analytics to optimize traffic flow, reduce congestion, improve safety, and minimize environmental impact. For example, adaptive traffic signal systems powered by ML algorithms can reduce wait times and fuel consumption, while smart parking systems can provide real-time availability data, reducing time spent searching for parking spots. This chapter covers the different advanced algorithms used in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and smart vehicles. After reading this chapter, the reader will be able to understand how these technologies integrate to optimize transportation processes, explore the key algorithms driving these innovations, and analyze their potential to enhance the sustainability and efficiency ...
