SIGNAL FLOW GRAPHS AND MASON’S RULE
Signal flow graphs (SFGs) are an LTI systems tool that enables one to take a set of ODEs describing a dynamic, LTI system, put them in graphical form (with nodes and branches), and then using Mason’s gain formula, easily find the I/O transfer function for the system. The SFG approach is ideally suited for quick, pencil-and-paper work because it replaces tedious, error-prone matrix inversion algebra as a necessary step in finding the state system’s transfer function.
